AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
Recent Australian telegrams are :— Sidney : The Governor and Lady Carrington aro making themselves very popular, and are personally visiting every place of interest. The Lambton miners' strike Still continues, the manager declining to give in to the demands of the men. A Royal Commission is likely to be appointed to enquire into the state of the defence force. Several destructive fires have lately occurred both in Sydney and Newcastle. Captain Strachan and party have arrived from New Guinea. They obtained a number of valuable timber and other specimens. The trip appears to have been successful, and the most amicable relations with the natives were cultivated byj the party. The Commercial Bank paid a dividend of 25, the City Bank .12A, and the Mercantile Bank 9 per ceut. ' Brisbane : The Savings Bank returns show an increase of £120,000 during the year. Dr Doherty was entertained here previous to his departure for England to take his seat in the House of Commons. The Chief Justice presided.— Melbourne : It is understood that Dr Quick has been offered the portfolio of Solicitor-General, and that Mr Deakin will assume the position of Minister of Water Supply. These will represent the Liberal party in the Government.
