A LAND DISPUTE.

i -* 1 The Town Clerk informed the Borough ' Council last night that there was a point in dispute in connection with th-3 extens ion of Grey street from the bridge to the 1 sea. The extension of Grey street from ' the Waikanae to the sea had been proceeded with under the P.W. Act, the native owners paid the sum of £38 ss, 1 and the signature of the Chief Surveyor • obtained to the plan, but when a copy of 1 the plan was forwarded to the natives through their agent, Captain Tucker, he objected that only that portion of the road had been paid for from the Govern- ! ment road to the sea beach, and said ' there still remained unpaid for that por--1 tion extending from the Waikanae to the ! Government road. It was now for the Council to decide what steps were to be ' taken to have the road gazetted. Cr Townloy said his recollection of the circumstances was that Captain Tucker had said the natives would give the land from the Waikanae to the Government road, but they had objected to give it 1 from that road to the beach because then ' Europeans would go and cart the firewood > from the beach. Subsequently he had 1 stated the natives would grant the other 1 part if it was paid for. Captain Tucke 1 had several times been urged to give the *■ deed of the upper piece but he had re- ' plied that the Council had the land and were using it, it could not be taken away, ' -md they migui; consider the transaction " closed. The reason they had purchased > the outside piece was because the inside ' piece had been given. i Cr Lewis corroborated all that Cr : Townley had said. Captain Tucker had k said, " You have already got the upper 5 piece ; the only piece you have to deal J with is the lower." The Mayor suggested that the matter should stand over till next meeting. It was one of those things the settlement of which would not be expedited by premai ture discussion. He would make full eni quiries into the matter if the "Council i would allow it to stand over. This course was agreed to.
