Whiting) becoming. exhausted was seenti reel in his saddle and attempt to clutel his horse's neck to save himself, but fail ing to do this he tumbled and was somewhat injured in the face by a stroke oi the horse's hoof. This occurred within ; few strides of the winning post, tluu spoiling a certain win. Whiting was badly hurt in the hurdle race at the recenl Devonport races, and had scarcely recovered from his illness.
