LOCAL AND GENERAL.
i The Ringarooma for South sails tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. j and the Rotomahana, for North, sails at 8 o'clock on Wednesday morning. A petition is in course of signature through Gisborne and the suburbs, signed by the inhabitants, praying the Assembly to remit the Beer Tax either in whole, or in part. The petition states that the tax, either directly or indirectly will fall on consumers. That the imposition of 6d a gallon will act as a severe blow to an important local industry, in which an immense amount of capital has beon invested by firms in both islands. Further, that it will lead to an increased consumption of ardent spirits, a matter to be deplored. Still further, that colonial-brewed beer is the ordinary beveriage of working men and, generally, among the middle classes of colonial populations. The petition has secured a very large number of signatures, and will be forwarded to Mr. Allan McDonald at Wellington which he will be asked to support.
