ATHLETIC SPORTS.
[To the Editor of the Herald.] Sib, — I was somewhat astonished, as well as amused, at seeing m your paper of last evening, a letter over the signature of " H. Oollefct, Hon. Sec, for the Committee," m which my name is brought into great prominence m con* neotion with an Athletic Club. My action has simply been this : I made overtures to the Gisborne Band to have sports on New Year's Day, for the double purpose of giving them an opportunity of reducing their indebtedness, and initiating an Athletic Club ; but upon learning that Mr. James Frier had started a canvassing tour collecting ss. from as many as would trust him, for the ostensible purpose of holding sports at the New Year, I inserted the advertisement convening a meeting of those desirous of establishing a club. I wished to place the movement on a proper footing, so that a Committee of respectable persons who, I was aware, sympathised and would heartily cooperate, might be formed. As to my bad taste — well, I was hot aware at the time of inserting the advertisement, nor have I since learned, that there is any committee. Who are they ? and' who appointed Mr. Collett secretary 1 An answer will oblige. Ido not blame Mr. Collett for the effusion with which he is credited, and have reason to believe that he neither signed the precious epistle, nor knew anything about it. I beg to assure Mr. Frier that there is every prospect of my scheme being a grand success, as I have not only the countenance, but the actual support of the whole of the lovers of athletic exercise m the district ; who, having heartily endorsed the idea, are determined to assist m the matter m every possible way. It will be seen that an adjourned meeting m connection therewith will be held on Saturday evening. — I am, &c, James Regan.
