HAWERA.
June 10. A large meeting of settlers was held on Saturday. Major Noakes said he would issue rifles to any settlers joining the Defence Force, and upwards of 100 men were armed and a company formed. With the light horse there are now upwards of 200 avined find determined men at Hawera. Others are still joining. The Government seem equal to any emergency. The settlers are determined not to abandon the district in the event of disurbances. Patrols will scour the country to inspire greater confidence. The Maories are still going to Parihalra at all hours taking flour and provisions. Yesterday Katene rode through the main street, and inspected the Volunteers when receiving arms. He seemed " scared " at seeing so many armed men and rode on without stopping. Every effort is being made to obtain sniders, and seeing the present danger of the district the settlers think that the Southern volunteers, as Englishman, should not want asking to give up theirs when their fellow countrymen are in absolute want of arms of precision. The. Natives are armed with hundreds of sniders. Norman by has a substantial defence force, well armed — every man there has joined.
