CHRISTCHURCH.
This Day. A meeting of unemployed was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Tuesday night ; the Mayo.- presided. The Hall was crowded, and resolutions passed, calling attention of the Government to the present state of the labor market, and requesting employment to be found ; also urging that immigration was at present out of proportion to the demand for labor, and should be reduced. The principal speaker was a car- | penter, named Lee, who advocated getting work by fair means if possible, but by all means getting it. During the evening one man who interupted Lee, was buffeted about the hall, and set upon violently by Lee, who knocked him down and half cbok?^ him, after which another man caught the unfortunate fellow by the neck and dragged him into the street. The Mayor at the finish of the meeting, expressed himself pleased at the very orderly manner in which the meeting was conducted. Mr. Bowen, M.H.Tt., addi*essed his constituents at Kaiapoi last night. He was in opposition, and intended to continue so towards the present Government. Every point in his speech was attacking the Government. A vote of thanks and con^ fidence was unanimously carried.
