May 27. • The Governor gave an official Birthday dinner on Saturday "niglit, at which Ministers, the Judges, and a number of members of "each House were present. Sir George Grey returned to Wellington by the Hinemoa yesterday morning. The body of a drowned man has been found near Island Bay, Wellington. There is no clue to his indentity. • This Day. The Oourt of Appeal yesterday upheld the conviction of Thomas Williams, Secretary of the Foresters' Court, convicted last season of embezzling the Court funds. Both cases unfinished. A specimen of cuttle fish, ten feet m length, was washed ashore at Wellington and the skeleton has been secured by Prof essor Kirk for the Museum. There was very little excitement over the mayoralty contest yesterday. Neither side appeared to be well organised. The total number of votes polled was very small.
