Severe Shock of Earthquake at Napier.

HEAVIEST EVER EXPERIENCED. GREAT ALARM. Napieb, This Day. One of the most severe shocks of earthquake which has ever been felt m Napier for some years, was experienced last night at a quarter to 11 o'clock. It had this distinguishment from other shocks which have been felt m recent years, — that it has produced an impression of alarm on the minds of people that something still more is to follow. The direction appeared to be from north to south. There was another shock at twenty minutes to 12. Auckland, Yesterday An accident occurred to the down train from Mercer to Auckland. Two carriages got off the line, but no damage was done, except the rails on the line got twisted.

It is considered dangerous to aUlow her to proceed on the voyage m her present condition. Wellington, Yesterday. An express train leases Dunedin at 8 a.m., and another leaves Invercargill 9-30 a. m. The trains will meet at Clinton, arriving at 12-30 p.m. There a stoppage of 15 minutes will be made for lunch. An express from Dunedin will stop at Balclutha and Milton. Invercargill, Yesterday. The Mataura election resulted as follows :— Shanks, 288 ; Kinross, 249. One return yet to come m ; but will m all probability augment Shanka's majority. Both candidates Greyites.
