PATEA COUNTY COUNCIL

ORDINARY MEETING The ordinary monthly meeting of the Patea County Council was held on Tuesday, C'rs. Back, Gibbs, Lupton, Watt, Pearce, Campbell, Watkins and Hurley being present. In the absence of the chairman Cr. Watt was voted to the chair. Mr. Johnston, the newly appointed overseer was present and introduced to the members. The clerk stated that Cr. Belton was ailed away to Wellington on urgent easiness. Since he had been elected m IU.L4 this was only the second meeting that he had failed to attend. On tuc motion of Or. Watkins Of. Belton was granted leave of absence. The Main Highways Board wrote with reference to the election of a representative on the District Highways Council. Mr. Belton was unanimously re-appointed. The Returning Officer reported that all sitting members of the Council had been re-elected.

The acting chairman said they could cake the re-election in two ways, either the ratepayers were quite satisfied or rhey were apathetic. He would take it that they were quite satisfied with the Council’s (work.

The acting chairman tendered' a Hearty welcome to Mr. Johnston, the new overseer, and expressed the hope that ho would have as pleasing a term of office as his predecessor Mr. Clarke.

A letter was read from Mr, E. F. Hemingway, Mayor of Patea, thanking the chairman and members for the assistance rendered him and his Council during his term of office; . The help given had materially assisted him, the Mayor said, in making his term a successful one and went a long way towards .cementing the good feeling that should exist between local bodies. The acting thanked Mr. Hemingway, who was present, and said he would convey the thanks to : the chairman. The National Service- department forwarded circulars re Home Guard capitatiou grant, aliens and Emergency Reserve Corps and Blood Trapsfusion Service. The Minister of Public Works wrote forwarding a copy of the River Control Bill, which was a lengthy one. The clerk said he had forwarded a copy to the chairman who had made several notes with regard to the Bill, Authorities appointed under the Bill would override existing local bodies. The acting chairman moved that a small committee be set up to consider the Bill. Seconded by Cr. Pearce and carried.

The Counties’ Association wrote with regard to the proposed Shops and Offices Legislation. The clerk stated that in accordance with the chairman’s instructions he had drafted a reply to be sent to the , association with some comments on the Bill. . The letter was approved. The Traffic Inspector reported that five driver’s licenses had been issued during the month and one heavy motor vehicle had been weighed. Two motor cvclists had been cautioned for cutting corners and failing to give signals. One driver had been warned for speeding. . The Health Inspector reported onfl case of infectious disease, (diptheria), n I lie County during the month .g The Patea Borough Council wrote applying to lift the temporary pipe Hue in Portland Quay. The request was granted, subject to the work being carried out to the .overseer’s satisfaction. * ■The Patea Borough Council wrote accepting the offer of the council to hire part of its road roller for £1 a year. The action of the sub-committee in making the, offer was confirmed. Reports were read and accounts passed for payment and the council rose.
