OBITUARY

ME. J. E. CAMPBELL The death took place at the Craigholm Private Hospital, llawera, on Friday following a severe operation, of Mr, James E. Campbell, May or of Hawera. A native of Hawcra, 1 lie late Mr. Campbell was the son of the late Mr. Malcolm J. Campbell who arrived - in New Zealand with his parents in the year 18(1.1, and who lived in Pa tea from 1870 to 1872, when they left it or Hawera, where Mr. Campbell’s father was in business for many years. The late Mr. Campbell was nothing if not thorough in everything he) undertook. Wishing to lie an optician lie visited England where he underwent ;• course of study and took his diploma. On his return to New Zealand lie practised as an optician for some years, subsequently selling his practise and taking up Land Agency work, in which lie was engaged up to the last. He was first returned as Mayor of llawera in 1933 when ho defeated Mr. W. G. Simpson, afterwards being returned unopposed at the subsequent elections. He was a splendid organiser and had an unlimited capacity for hard work, as a result of which llawera bciiedtted greatly during the time he occupied the Mayoral chair. Tic is survived by his widow, for whom the deepest sympathy will be felt in her bereavement.

The fun oral took place in TTawcra vestci day, representatives of practically every local body in Taranaki at tending. The Patea Borough Council was represented by Ilis Worship the Mayor Mr. E. P. Hemingway, the Deputy-Mayor Mr. F. Naiamith, Cr. Ramsbottom, ex-Mayor, and the Town Clerk Mr. L. W. Austin.
