TAX ON DOMESTICS
PROTEST BY HEADMASTER POSITION OF COLLEGE STAFF The payment by domestics at. Wellington College of a boarding' tax of Bd. in the £ in addition to the employment -tax was the subject of a letter from the headmaster, Mr. W. A. Armour, at last week’s .mleeting of the Wellington Colleges’ Board. "The Government formulated a policy of the restoration of all cuts,” said Mr. -Armour, "but this board oi hostel tax has remained and in my opinion its imposition is iniquitous. I am writing, therefore, to ask the board to make an effort to have all our domestic staff relie-vpd from paying this tax. Why should if be pM4 by domestics who He not civil servants because they AVOfk in ft Government institution 1 ? Tills tax is not, and cannot be imposed on domestics in private employment. "I must imy that flic re has always been a strong- objiict.jon raised by fun* domestics to the payment of this tax and tinn'e and again I have been risked to have them relieved of its payment. W« have many times lost domestics because of its imposition and I may iwy my sympathy is entirely wifh -thtetnii in the protest made about It."
Mrs. Knox Gilmer: Under the (Social Security Act, they’ll have to pay a shilling in the £. It was decided to send a copy of tire letter to the Education Department.
