MONTHLY MEETING. 'The monthly meeting of the Patea Harbour Board was held yesterday, Mr. A. T. Christensen presiding. Messrs W. H. Watkins, W. H. Southcombe, W. Bank, G. N. Meuli, and S. A. Chisholm were also present.. Leave of absence was granted Mr, A. Pearce and wishes were expressed for his speedy recovery. Owing to the inclement weather the visit of inspection to the walls and pilot station was. postponed until next month.

STOEM 'DAMAGE BESTOIIATIOX. The Commissioner of Employment wrote stating that No. 5 scheme labour could lie employed on storm damage restoration work on the basis of a subsidy of lies per week for married men and 27s (id for single men. No subsidy will lie payable after March 28. The letter was received. LAUNCH OFFEEED. Mr. A. Prcstncy, New . Plymouth, wrote offering 40ft launch for £lO5, It was decided that the pilot inspect tim launch, the matter being left in the hands of the chairman and pilot. JAPANESE WANT IKON. The Milsui Bussar Kaisha Co., Ltd., of Japan, wrote stating that the demand for iron ore in Japan Was increasing, and the imports last year we re 2,150,000 tons, and their Japanese people were seeking a new source of : apply of iron ore. “If the quality and price of ironsand is satisfactory,” said the letter, “we think there would be a good prospect of exporting' same to Japan.” They would be pleased, therefore, to receive a 1 or 2 pounds' sample of iron-ore produced in the district, together with any information, sui-h as analysis, estimated quantity available, so that the same may be passed on to Japan.

The letter was received, and it was resolved that the matter of drawing up a reply be left in the hands of the chairman and the board’s legal adviser. LEASES OF SECTIONS. Mr. F. W. Hamel, borough solicitor, wrote stating that the consent of the Borough Council should be obtained to the subdivision of,the area now leased to the Patna Butchery Co. and ■■the Seaside Improvement Society. It was resolved that the board apply to the Borough Council for its consent to the subdivision. KING GEORGE’S DEATH. , The secretary to the Governor General wrote acknowledging the board’s resolution of sympathy in connection with the death of King George V. It was stated that His Excellency would arrange for the text of the resolution, to bo communicated to His Majesty the King and-Queen Mary. The letter was received. NEW SCALE OF RELIEF. The Unemployment Board wrote enclosing new scales of relief as from March 2. The letter was received. TENDER FOB GROYNE./ A telegram was received from Mr. C. F. Pulley offering to take the river protection job at .10 per cent, actual cost, to. include labour, material, transport of plant, and ordinary incidental expenses, provided the repairs at the heads were taken in conjunction with it, as previously offered. The matter of accepting a tender for the building of the groyne was held over until next meeting. TENDER. FOR DREDGE BUCKET. The tender of Messrs. McCarty and Hunger for a new and stronger bucket for the dredge was accepted. HARBOUKM ASTER ’S REPORT. Captain W. E. Barnes reported as follows for February:'The bar was unworkable on seven days, with heavy southerly gales. There were .10 arrivals and IS departures for the month. Soundings over the bar were impracticable during the month, except- by the vessels entering port. The dredge operated at the wharf when there was sufficient run out to shift' the spoil when dumped. When not dredging, the crew were employed on maintenance work. On the 20th J. Tairoa went ou the sick list’ with' ah injured knee. When dredging a casual hand was employed. The condition of the walls remains as in my last report, except that the heavy southerly seas during the mouth washed away a lot of concrete along the eastern walk Boring on the western wall has been discontinued for some time. Tho'.ccHutractor is endeavouring to obtain a harder typo of drill. The signal station is in fair working order.
