AMATEUR ATHLETICS

WEDNESDAY’S RUNS. The usual fortnightly runs of the local Amateur Athletic Club were resumed on Wednesday, when two races, 120yds and 880yds> were run. Nine faced,the starter in the former and eight in the latter. Both races weie most exciting, tho I2oyds being won by two inches, and the half-mile by two feet, the rest of the field being close up in both eases. The following were the winners:—

120yds: Roy Martin, 10yds, 1; L Edwards, sydsj 2; S. Cousins, 7yds, 3, Time 1245.

880yds: J. McKenna, 70yds, 1; B. Cousins, 45yds, 2; D. Paterson, a 3yds, 3. Paterson put in a splendid spurt, and just failed to catch the leading men. Edwards was close behind Paterson after putting in a good spurt at the finish. TO-NIGHT’S PACES. To-night a 75yds race will be run and also a 440yds race, together with a half-mile cycle race. Those will give the local runners a breather for next Wednesday’s electric light sports. SCHOOL SPORTS. Over 1200 entries; including about 250 from the Waverlcy School, have been received for the Patca and District Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association’s sports on Saturday week next, March 19, which should be a complete success. The entries represent an increase of about 100 on those of last year.
