DISASTROUS BLAZE
WELLINGTON CITY BLOCK. DAMAGE ABOUT £150,000. One of tlic most serious conflagrations in the of Wellington broke out at about ton o'clock on Monday night in the city block bounded ;by Courtenay Place, Blair Street, Wakefield Street and Allen Street. The chief premises in the block are jiiOstly shops and warehouses, but most of them, including large fruit and vegetable markets, were destroyed. The damage was estimated at about £150,000. The brigade had a herculean task in subduing the fire, and time and again their task looked entirely hopeless.
