Mr Frost, of the local Post Office staff, left on Saturday, on transfer to Danucvirke. Mr J. D, Rockefeller, the American millionaire, though 84, is to come out of his retirement for a special occasion. He is preparing for an impressive and expensive trip. In the next twelve months or so he will undertake a tour of the less frequented and out-of-the-way parts of the world. It will occupy six months, at least. A splendid yacht is being built for the purpose, and with 100 guests he will embark on what will bo perhaps his greatest holiday.

Mrs Mary Ann Smith, mother of Mr S. G. Smith, M.P., and relict of the late Mr E. M. Smith, for many years M.P. for Taranaki, died on Eriday morning, in her 77th year. Mrs Smith was born at Chatham, Kent, and was the daughter of Sergeant N. Golding, of the 65th Regiment. She came out to New Zealand with her parents when a young girl, and experienced the hardships of the pioneers during the early settlement and the Maori troubles. Mrs Smith was a very capable organiser, and in this connection rendered valuable help to her husband during his Parliamentary career. She always manifested a keen interest in social work and was a strong churchwoman, being a regular worshipper at St. Mary's Church. Of a kindly disposition, she was a woman who made no enemies, but, on the other hand, endeared herself to all who knew her. She leaves a family of seven sons, Messrs W. J. and J. S. (New Plymouth), S. J. (Artillery, Auckland), T. P. (Now Plymouth), S. G, (member for Taranaki), L. L. (Lands Department, New Plymouth), and H. M. (Ongaruhe), and two daughters, Mts W. L. Blair (Stratford) and Mrs A. K. Dyne (Taihape), also 38 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The funeral took place at To Hcnui Cemetery yesterday afternoon. . t ,
