OBITUARY

MR JAMBS PAIR WEATHER, SEN. Still another link with the past has been severed by the death which took place at the local Hospital yesterday of Ivtr James Pairweathcr, sen., at the npe age of 80 years. The deceased, who was one of the lirst white children to be born in the Dominion, was of Scottish parentage, and was born in the Hutt district, where ho lived for some time prior to moving to Canterbury. After a short residence there he came to the Patea district in the year 1874, taking up land at • Kakaramea, this beingsome of the lirst Native confiscation land that was offered. Later he took up some laud in the Opaku district, where he resided for a number of years. The deceased, w'ho was of a quiet and unassuming disposition, was held in the highest respect by all who knew him for his sterling character, his word being his bond always. Though never seeking the limelight, he was always ready to give anyone the benefit of his knowledge and experience in agricultural matters, which were considerable. In addition, ho possessed a fund of information with regard to the early days of the Dominion, which was both interesting and instructive to the present generation. His wife predeceased him some 33 years ago. He is survived by a family of live sons and three daughters, viz., Charles (Patea), George, Joseph and James (Kakaramca), and Robert (Wanganui), . and Mesdames Lightfoot and Gibbs (Blenheim) and Hottpr, jun, (Opaku), for whom the ueepest sympathy will be felt in their bereavement.
