The news that Professor Garstang, of Liverpool University, the director of the British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem, is about to excavate the Crusader city of Ascalon, will sot historians agog for details, says an English exchange. One of the five chief cities of- the Philistines, Ascalon was birthplace of Herod the Great, and the scene of many conflicts in the Crusades. Salad in and Richard 1 captured it in turn, and the Sultan Bihars razed its fortifications in 1270. Familiar enough to Old Testament readers, the city’s name also survives in current speech through its derivative “shallot,” a vegetable tliat originated outside the walls of Ascalon. Chatting with a London reporter, Mr .1. C. Cooper, of Masterton, said: Trade with Russia seems to be entirely put of the question. Their roubles arc hardly worth the cost of printing. Indeed, 1 met a man who told me that he had bought 10,000 roubles lor £2. Lenin lias accomplished what he sot out to do in Russia —destroy capital—but ho realises that until he has destroyed capital in the rest of the world Russia will be in a hopeless condition. Until ho is able to say to the worker in England, “Von make ploughs and machinery for the Russian peasants for nothing, or else you have no bread to eat,” he has in no way accomplished his purpose. He realises perfectly that his system is useless unless it is world-wide —and that is the aim of the Bolshevist. There is certainly no hope for trade with Russia so long as the Soviet Government remains.
