NOTES.
The annual meeting of the Moumahaki - Waverley Horticultural Society, which was called for Friday night,'lapsed as there were only five members present. It seems remarkable that so little interest is taken in the annual meeting as the show is always a great success, and the committee work hard to make it so. The few members present on Friday night decided to postpone the meeting till next Thursday night at 7.30, when it is hoped there will be a large attendance. Miss Eosina Buckman, who is well known in the Waverley district whore she once resided, and whose wonderful singing aroused such enthusiasm at the opening of the Beccham opera season at Drury Lane, related the following topical and amusing story at a reception mooting (states an English exchange). "There are sounds sweeter even than sweet music just now," said Miss Buckman, her eyes twinkling.. Then seeing that she had arrested the attention of her hearers, she went on demurely : "Circumstances, you see, alter cases. For instance, I heard of a young man who, when his wife was performing one day recently upon the piano, with exquisite taste and skill, burst into the room unceremoniously and held up his hand in mute expostulation. 'Mary,' he cried, as she looked up in surprise, 'why on earth don't you stop playing for a bit? Great: Scott, where is your bump of appreciation? Don't you \yant to listen to the sound of our half ton of coal rattling down into the cellar V "
