EGMONT-WANGANUI HUNT.

Meet at Mr Alf Symes’. “ Absolutely the best day’s sport of the season ” was the verdict of those whose good fortune it was to take part in the meet of the EgmontWanganui Hunt Club at Mr Alf Symes’ homestead at Whenuakura last week. There was a big attend* ance of members and spectators who were all welcomed to “ The Grove.” After a sumptuous luncheon the huntsmen made for the field but prior to starting it was deemed ah excellent opportunity to immortalise the occasion and the huntsman lined up his pack for the photographer’s benefit and an excellent portrait' was obtained by Mr T. Jones of hounds and huntsmen. Immediately after* wards the hounds were thrown off. The country here is bigger than most that the Olub hunt oyer and some of the fences were stiff enough to test the jumping ability of the best and most seasoned hunters. During the day a tond many spills occurred but fortunately all were of a light order and one thing noticeable was that with the exception of one fence the jumps were free from, boxthorn, a feature no doubt much appreciated by the horses. The scent was good and the hounds worked hard all the day running over most of Messrs Symesi and Honeyfield’s country, one or two of the runs over big country being long enough to satisfy the greediest and other runs of a briefer nature were often shortened by a fresh hare rising and crossing the tracks. However two kills were scored during the day aud by half-past three the Deputy« Master noticing hounds, horses and members were beginning to show signs that they had had plen'y of jumping and running for one day call°d the packs off and all made for the homestead, where they were hospitably entermined to afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs A. Symes. i The Master, Mr 0. Symes, ou behalf of the Olub thanked Mrs A. Symes for the which they had entertained them all that day, also Mr Symes and Mr Honeyfield for allowing their country to be bunted over. He hoped this would not be the last hunt held at “ The Grove ” and next year would see them back again and' see Mr Honevfisld following in Mr Alf Symes’ footsteps and out jumping his own fences 'Three cheers were called for the Symes family, Mr A Symes in responding thanked the members for the way in which (hey endorsed the Master’s remarks and hoped there would bo many more occasions on which they would again come hack to a bunt.
