Sir Wilfred Laurier, Premier of Canada, insists upon the agreement for arbitration with regard to the question of the Alaskan boundary preceding any settlement of the difficulties between America and Canada. The American papers are discussing levying retaliatory tariffs. Ottawa, May 29. The Canadian Government asserts it offered to arbitrate unreservedly in regard to the Alaskan dispute, but America stipulated that all towns in the disputed territory must be recognised as American, but Canada declined. Sir Wilfrid Laurier states that personally he would rather compromise than arbitrate.
