A SAD FATAL ACCIDENT.

Dunedin, Oot. IS. Davy Gillies, an engineer at the Walton Park Coal Mine, lost his life this morning by falling down the shaft. The shaft is 175 ft deep and there is 30ft of water at the bottom since the mine was flooded some months ago. He was going down the shaft with the deputy manager to repair a leak in the pump. After descend* ing 90ft he appeared somehow to miss his hold and fell. Kenyon the manager’, went down over ICtJft to attempt to rescue him. but finding he could not the bands were got to* gether and men lowered in a barrel. It was not till the afternoon, however, the body was recovered, Dr Well, who was present, had great difficulty iujrestainiug the men from going down to rescue and certain death. Gillies leaves a widow and a family of ten.
