Tiie four principal centres are as follows— Auckland collected £371,272 at a cost of £1 17s 3d per cent; Wellington, £3G5,4G4, costing £1 9s 4d ptr cent; Dunedin, £359,202, costing £1 l£s lid, and Lyttelton and Christchurch £272,188, costing £1 14s Gd per cent. There is then an immediate drop to Napier, where £75,949 was collected at a cost of £1 13s 2d per cent. The collections at other ports arc all very much smaller, with, generally, a corresponding rise in cost of collection. At Now Plymouth the amount collected was £14,489, at a cost of £2 8s 'percent. At Waitara £G,J74 was collected at a cost of £5 5s 4d per cent. Patea alone, amongst the small ports, appears to have been economical, as its collection was £3,175 at a cost of only £1 10s lid per cent, being beaten only by the metropolis in the relative cost of collection. Kaipara holds the honourable position of being the most cosily port in New Zealand, asits collection was £l,OlB, which coat £8 7s per cent to collect. Picton comes next •, the year’s collection amounting only to £4Bl, at a cost of £7 Is Id par cent. The average cost of collection throughout the whole colony was £1 IGs 8d per cent; so that Wellington. Christchurch, Dunedin, Napier and Patea’ were the ports which were below the i average, all others being above it.
