PATEA-KAKARAMEA FOOTBALL MATCH.
* TO THE EDITOII. Sir, —In the course of the above match at Kakaramea last Friday I thought it right to penalise a Kakaramea forward on two occasions for carrying the ball between his logs in the scrum. This decision was taken exception to by some of the players after the match, and so I wrote to Mr Firth, of Wellington College, on the subject, ft will he of interest to footballers to know what ho says. He tells mo that the matter has just lately been brought before the Apnoal Committee, of (he Now Zealand Union, and it was decided that such play was pr-rfecih/fair so long as the playor did not kneel down cr touch the ball with bis hands. I hope the Kakaramea players will, therefore, accept my apology for requiring them to pay a penalty which they bad not legally incurred. I make this matter public for the guidance of players and spectators in the forthcoming match between those two teams.—Yours faithfully, C. COLEIIIUGE HARPER, Referee. The Ticarage, August Bth, 1805.
