FOOTBALL.

(By Lropkick.)

The Clifton team defeated the Star team by three points (goal from penalty kick) to nil on Thursday lust. The result was rather a surprise to footballers. The Patea F.C.’s Senior Cup team—or perhaps I should say, a portion of it—journeyed to Manaia on Saturday last to play tho Waimatc Cup team, and were defeated by ul points to nil. The match does not require any comment, beyond stating that the Patea players were ridiculously outclassed in every point of the game. Only eleven of the fifteen chosen to represent Patea put in an appearance, and emergency men (including two Manaia players) were taken on to make up a team. The absentees were Jollie, (capt.), Ball, Hamilton, and Tommy (aboriginal). Mr G. Pearce acted as referee and Messrs Baldwin (Manaia) and C. Hamerton (Patea) as touchjudges. Tho mombcrs’of tho Patea team were very forcible in their condemnation of the action of their captain in not going to Manaia., with them on Saturday, and, I am informed, it will require a very satisfactory explanation to avert a requisition from the club requesting him to resign tho position of captain, I shall probably again refer to this matter after Mr Jollie’s explanation has been before the committee. I Tho return match between the Patea school boys and Kakaramea and Marmtalii boys, was played on the Domain on •Saturday last and resulted in a draw, neither side scoring. No limbs were broken during this match.

The members of the Patea R C committee are reminded of the meeting to bo hold at the Central Hotel this evening. A full at tendance is particularly requested, as business of great importance is to fro brought forward,
