POLICE COURT.

This Day. (Before J. A. McKenna, Esq., J.P.) W. Hudson was charged with attempting to break into Mrs Fox’s house on the ; r night of Thursday, 4th April, 1895. Mrs Fox gave evidence to the effect that she went to bed about half past ten, and a short time after beard a noise as if some one was knocking at the side of the house. She got up and looked out, but could not see anything. A little later she beard the noise again as if someone were under the floor. Tiio children all ran into her room and said someone was in the house. She again looked about, but could not see anyone; but she sent her boy to Mr Rossiter to ask him to come. He came at once, but could not find anyone, so they sent for Constable Carr who brought with him a lantern, and after a short search found the prisoner under the house. She had never seen the man before, but was certain the prisoner was the 'man. Miss Fox gave evidence corroborating above. Constable Carr, sworn, stated that at half past eleven he was called to Mrs Fox’s, where he found Mr Rossiter and his son looking for someone who had been beard about the house, and after a short search they found prisoner under the house, lying full srretch, face dowu. He called to him to come out, but prisoner would neither speak nor move. He then suggest o i bringing a dog over and sending it under the bouse. Prisoner mumbled something, but would not come out. He then got a rope, and young Fox crawled under the house and tied it round prisoner’s leg, rjfhen they hauled him out, and he locked him up. In his opinion prisoner was not sober. There have been several complaints about prisoner before ; he attempted at one time to break into Mrs O’Brien’s house, in Storeyville, about 3 a.m. Coiroborative evidence as to attempting to break into Mrs O’Brien’s bouse-was given. The prisoner when asked bad nothing to say for himself except that he was drunk and did not know wbat he was doing. Prisoner was sentenced to three months hard labour in Wanganui gaol.
