The County Council met at the County offices yesterday, when there were present Robt. Horner (chairman), Crs Fleming, Hunter, Lupton, Morgan, Paterson and Syme. The minutes of the last regular and special meetings were read and confirmed. Correspondence inward nnd outwards was read and discussed. A letter from the Waverley Town Clerk re the Waverley pound was read, and after councillors had discussed the subject it was resolved, That the Clerk be instructed to write to the Waverley Town Board requesting them to gazette the yards recently erected at Waverley for that purpose, as a public pound. A letter from the Patea West Road Board requesting the Council to assist in mending the Manawapou road, damaged by the carting of gravel on to (he county road. Some of the Councillors expressed themselves in favour of assisting the Board in the matter, and Cr Symcs proposed, and Or Hunter seconded, That the Council get the water-tables repaired on the Lower Taumaha and Manawapou roads, damaged by carting gravel. Cr Fleming proposed as an amendment, and Cr Lupton seconded, That this Council decline any responsibility for damage done to any by-road within the County through gravel-carting or otherwise. The amendment was carried. Cr Fleming drew the attention of the Council to the very common but injurious practice of using the County roads for drafting cattle, thus making some portions of the road more like a stock-yard than a public road. Considerable discussion took place, but councillors did not see that they had very definite power to interfere, so after discussion the matter was allowed to drop, and the Council adjourned till 2 p.m. On reassembling, the accounts, amounting to £l5O Is lid, wore placed on the table and passed for payment. Cr Morgan asked the Council if something could not be done to the culvert at Kaknramea, as it was now in a very bad condition and should bo looked to at once. After other councillors had spoken, Cr Horner proposed and Or Symes seconded, That Crs Hunter and Paterson be a committee to examine and repair the Kakaramca culvert as they may consider advisable. Carried. The question of a County nominee to the Harbour Board came up for discussion, Mr A. Palmer having declined to accept that appointment, when, on the motion of Cr Horner, seconded by Cr Morgan, it was resolved, That Mr Christie be the County’s nominee. The chairman then drew councillor’s attention to the subject of the opening up of (be back country, which bad been alluded to in the columns of the Patea Mail, and thought that they might take some action with a view of having the back country explored. The other councillors being of the same opinion after discussion it was resolved, That this Council draw the attention of the Minister of Lands to the advisability of opening up the country inland from Patea to the Central route, and that the Borough of Patea be requested to support the movement. The Council then adjourned.
