PATEA FIRE BRIGADE.

The Volunteer Fire Brigade held a practice last night at eight o’clock, when the hose and ladder competition for the Patea Mail prize took place. Three men competed, Foreman Willis, Branchman Connor, and Fireman M. Carey. The trial was to run 20 yards to -the engine, take out a length of hose and a short branch, attach the hose to the end of 140 feel of delivery hose already on the engine, range down the new*4o feet length, fix the branch and carry up the ladder to the parapet of a building thirty feet high, and come to the ready position. Captain Kells and Secretary Gibbons acted as Judges, and Mr Bright kindly took the position of timekeeper. Branchman Connor look Jhe prize, completing the work set out in 1 minute 19 seconds. Foreman Willis followed in 1 minute 20 seconds, and Fireman Carey in Imin 22secs, thus shewing a very keen competition and close finish. Captain Kells is to be complimented on. the high state of efficiency of his corps, and the willingness and good nature which accompany the execution, of every order, and the pure volunteer spirit which is displayed by every man in the Brigade. The prize consists of a photographic album with a metal shield in the centre of the cover on which is engraved P.V.F.B. Patea Mail Prize won by Branchman T. Connor, March, 1885.'
