AUCKLAND, Feb. 25. : A deputation from the Chamber of Commerce waited on Sir Julius Vogel re the San Francisco Mail Service, and suggested that the mails be despatched by swift Atlantic steamers on Saturdays instead of Thursday’s slow boats; also to drop Honolulu as a port of call. Sir Julius replied adversely to the first suggestion, and said the second would involve an increasing subsidy of £2OOO. WELLINGTON, Feb 25. The outbreak of smallpox on board the steamer Ringarooma, from Auckland to Sydney, created some little excitement here. The examination at New Zealand ports of each Sydney vessel will be a most minute one, and every precaution will be taken to prevent the spread of the disease in this . colony. Peb 26 . The Minister allows exhibits for the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition to be carried free of charge on railways. Applications for space in the Exhibition must be deposited at the offices of the various local committees throughout the colony on Saturday next without fail. The space is very fast filling up. The body of young Urwin, drowned on the 14th inst. was recovered this morning. This day.
The Secretary of the Post Office notifies that the Australia, with the January English mails, left San Francisco for Auckland on the 16tb inst, two days later than time-table date. The Zealandia, with the February colonial mails, arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on the 22nd inst. two days earlier than time-table date. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb 26.

GISBORNE, This day.. A banquet was given to the Hon. Mr Ballance last night. In a speech on the occasion the Native Minister promised to get legislative powers to clear up the incomplete land transactions on this coast which, he said, was the only thing that would give it renewed prosperity. Mr Ballance proposed the toast of the Harbor Board, and urged the Board to make a breakwater on Goode’s plan. He promised to visit the Nagatiporu tribe at Waipute before the session. Mr Ballance left by the Hinemoa which arrived from Auckland at midnight. During the day Mr Ballance attended a large native meeting and made a speech generally in the same tenor as at Kihikihi. He received a number of deputations, his answers in many cases being favorable, he refused the native request that he should stop for the Waipii land conrt. DUNEDIN, Feb 25. The Union Company do not intend to allow the Ringarooma, which has been released from quarantine at Sydney, to resume running for a fortnight so that extraordinary precautions may be taken to prevent her from carrying infection.
