LOCAL INDUSTRIES.
We are pleased to learn that there is every prospect of the Sawmill Company being successfully 'floated. Over 250 shares of the 400 which comprise the issue hare been subscribed, and several people have promised to take up some. Wo would remind those that the list will be closed to-morrow evening, when a general meeting will be held to decide if, the' company, shall be formally constituted. ■ We would urge upon all who can afford to take even one share, the importance of-doing so without further delay. The establishment of any dusiry which promises to be fairly suc-
cessfnl, as this oner does, would go a long way towards dispelling'the dullness of trade in the town. Population is leaving us simply through want of work and. in ,their own.;interests it' behovestownspeople, even though they make a small present, sacrifice, to do what they can towards keeping, the working population in the place instead of allowing it to depart for more favoured localities. Oh several occasions y?.o have advocated the importance of local industries as' beneficial alike to town and country.- And we would also once more take the occasion, to impress upon our readers the adviseableness of forming-’ail Industrial Association, to investigate and see what industries are really suited to'the place, and how they might best be established. With the fine country surrounding ns,' a railway on the point of completion run ning on either side, and a port—which if not first-class, is at any rale good enough to do a large trade—surely we should not despair of seeing Palea a prosperous place. But that depends almost entirely upon the people themselves. Nature has been bountiful, ,to the district, but energy and perseverance are • .necessary to turn her-gUtsf to account. The question of forming an association such as we have suggested might bo discussedat the meeting to-morrow, which we hope will bo a representative one, and, if the matter is taken up with spirit, we feel sure that a stop in the right direction will have been made, .
