NEW HIGHWAY DISTRICT.

TO THE EDITOR. v Sir, —The thanks of the ratepayers -signing the petition for a new highway district south of Waverley are due to Councillors Morgan, Foreman, and Horner, in not altering their decision in granting their request, and in doing so have acted strictly in accordance with the Act. One fails to see Mr Bridge’s drift in moving that they reverse: their decision and leave the question in the hands of the ratepayers to deal with. Tho ratepayers have dealt with it already in presenting their petition to the.Council, and I do not think one of them has altered his views regarding the new highway district yet. I think that Mr Bridge being .defeated so many times in trying to carry his views regarding the reading of the Act, should settle down to it like a good boy, for it is hard to make the public read wbat is not to be found in plain English, notwithstanding a Taranaki lawyer’s opinion, and other- would-be authorities. As for the Wairoa Highway Boardashing the Council to refuse the constitution of the district on the grounds that two-thirds of the whole road district had not. signed the petition, I can inform them that the Wards wanting separation do not want their sighatures, |

so they need 'not, trouble themselves. I am afraid they are like children crying over spilt milk, and beginning to fear they will got no more .; but had their views not been so narrow regarding their duty to the public, they would not have required to have been howling now. A district can’t always stand paying high rates to’ make ono or two pet roads for the members of a Board ; while the majority of ratepayers have to go without, or sec their different roads totally neglected by the Board and their own members.—Yours, &c., Oiairmont,. D. Fleming. July 10th.
