An attempt to effect a compromise in the notorious libel case, Belt versus Lawes, having failed, the case will shortly be retried. In the House of Commons to-day, a Bill providing for woman’s suffrage, was thrown out on the motion for second jeading by a majority of 16. It is announced that the Hon, F. E. Plunkett, Secretary to the British Embassy at Paris, has been appointed British Minister to Japan, vice Sir Henry Parkes, transferred to Pekin. PARIS, July 7.

The Orleanists princes had an interview to-day with the Comte de Chambord. The meeting was not of a political nature. The Paris Temps urges the Government to grant a charter to a French company for acquiring the New Hebrides Islands with concessions similar to those granted by Great Britain to the North Borneo Trading Company. Thousand of Ryots are reported to be homeless and in a destitute condition. ALEXANDRIA, July 8. During very stormy weather yesterday the steamer Black Boy became a total wreck while attempting to obtain salvage from the George Roper. The crew of the Black Boy were all saved by a lifeboat.
