THE LATE ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I hope yon will allow me to set the mind of the public at ease with regard to “ Ratepayer.” It is freely said that “ Ratepayer” is a merchant in town, but that gentleman :is at. as great a loss to know who “ Ratepayer ” is as any other person, and I may here state that I never sought the honour of Mayor or Councillor in my life, nor do I intend, as it is entirely out of my line. But I have always felt it my duty to draw the attention of the public to anything that-1 might see going wrong. I hope those men who profess to know more about other people’s business' than- they ought, and write about characters will take Robert Burns for their guide, and see themselves as others see them. If their own acts are not before the public, it is simply because they are not made known. I hope yon will allow me to thank you for the stand you took in letting candidates .fight their own battle and go in on their own merits. We may call it a regular hand to hand set-to without the Press poisoning the mind of the supporters on either side, —Yours, &c., Ratepayer. Dec. 4. -
