TE WHITTS POLICY .
Tun final report of the West Coast Commission has been summarised in a Maori translation, and the Taranaki Herald says it has been sent to Te Whiti. Our Wellington correspondent stated a fortnight ago that the Government had opened a communication with Tc Whiti at Parihaka, to ascertain if he would accept the settlement and the compensation recommended by the Commission. The proposition to him was understood to be in this form :—Will you share the sovereignty of the West Coast with the Wellington Government, taking the Parihaka country as your exclusive territory, with other adjacent reserves of large area along the Waimate Plains ? Te Whlti’s answer is not yet known ; but reports from Parihaka show that he holds a high and defiant tone in addressing his people at the present meeting. No wonder at that, for he has been taught that defiance is the surest way to victory in dealing with pakcha officials. But in defying the Government Te Whiti appears to have no idea of war. He can get more by stolid resistance than by open fighting; and the Parihaka Prophet is no fool, though he may be a humbug.
