STOCK SALES. Mr F. B. Jackson reports on Wednesday : Prices of stock ruled at about last reported values. I have held two sales during the past fortnight. The Waverley sale was dull throughout, most of the stock being sold after the auction. The yards were not well filled. At the St. Hill-street yards to-day, a largo number of stock came forward, every pen being used. The beef was of inferior quality, and not in much demand. Fat cattle are so plentiful that the trade get supplied at low prices oustide. As the winter continues better rates may be expected. Store cattle were .in. numbers. , Nearly all were sold under the hammer One pen of bullocks were turned out unsold. Prices for young cattle were in favor of the sellers, arid good quality milch cows made extreme rates. Of sheep I bad a large supply. No really good wbetbers offered. Ewes sold at the quotations below, which were about the same as those at last sale. Horses, as usual, I sold nearly half the number that were offered. A number of buggies were offered, but failed to find purchasers, even at low figures. They aro now on sale
privately. Pigs.—None offered. Cattle.—‘24o head were yarded—Fat cows,’ £5 2s Gd to £6 2a 6d ; steers, 2- - , £3 12s Gd; yearlings, £2 2s Gd to £2 15s; cows, £3 to £4 ss; milch cows, £G 10s, £7, £lO ss, and £ll 10s; 3- steers, £5 7s Gd. FINANCIAL REPORT. Messrs Ashfortri and Liffiton report : Money is more plentiful, but except for large suras 10 per cent, is still easily obtainable, although a lower figure is ruling outside the local market, and outside money has been placed at 8 per cent, on good security. Altogether more business is being done, and it is to be hoped we have seen the worst of the bad times.
