TO STAND THIS SEASON IN THE ISawera fJpHE Pure-bred Clydesdale Stallion, KNOOEDON, A Bright Bay, rising three years old, standing 164 hands high, with immense muscular power and splendid action. Knockdon is out of the celebrated mare Princes*. Princess by Emperor, out of tlio celebrated mare Kate, imported by the late Mr James Strachan. Princess took first prize in Timaru in 1874, against eleven brood mares. Emperor gained three iirst and three second prizes, being beaten only by his sire Napoleon. . Knockdon ’s sire was bred by James N. Fleming, Esq., of Knockdon, out of the renowned mare- Rosie, by Prince Christian. Prince Christian was also bred by Mr Fleming ; was by his horse Prince Consort out of his prize mare Nell, Rosie was also bred by Mr Fleming ; her sire was bred by Major Findlay, of Eastern Hill, out of a Highland and Agricultural Society’s prizewinner. Her dam, Old Rosie, gained first prize as a 3-ycar-old at the Highland and Agricultural Society’s Show at Dumfries, and as a brood mare the following year at Kelso. Rosie gained many prizes in Scotland, amongst others, first, as a 2-year-old at Ayr, 1867 ; first, as a 3-year-old at Ayr, 1868 ;'second, as a biood mare at Ayr and Mayhole, 1869 ; and first as a brood mare at Ayr, in 1871 ; same day winning sweepstakes for best brood mare, open to Scotland. She was beaten at Ayr and Maybole in 1869, by Mr Fleming’s mare Salt, but was placed before same mare in 1871. As a brood mare, Rosie has not been surpassed. Her first foal, a filly, was four times first as a yearling, viz., at Ayr, Glasgow, Maybole, and Highland and Agricultural Society’s Show at Dumfries. In 1871, she was shown twelve times, and always gained the first place. These winnings included Glasgow, East Kilbride, and Highland and Agricultural Society’s Show at Perth. In 1872 she was again first at Ayr. Hoisecond foal, also a filly, gained second prize at Ayr, and first at Glasgow, and Highland and Agricultural Society’s Show at Perth as a yearling in 1871. In 1872 she was again first at Ayr and Glasgow. At present she is considered the best of her age in Scotland. Her next foal was Knockdon. He was foaled on the 26tb May, 1871, and gained the first prize at Ayr, and second gow, in 1872, and first at Timani.'tfs a 3-yeai-bld in 1873, and first agalfi in 1875 against all comers. Knockdon took first prize in Timaru as a yearling ; first in Wanganui as a 2-year-old —ll;ese being the only occasions on which he was.shown. Teiois —Five guineas for Single Marcs. NOTICE is hereby- givc'n, that the Wairoa Highway Board propose to make a Side Cutting Six Chains long, and for such purpose require to take from Section 449, Okotuku District, land one chain wide; commencing about two chains north of the south-west corner of Section 426, and running in a north-westerly and northeasterly direction six chains till its intersection with the Government-surveyed road. The plans of the proposed work, and of- the lands to he taken, will be open for inspection at Mr John M‘Lean’s residence, Kohi. All persons affected are hereby" required to set forth in writing any wellgrounded objections to the execution of the said work, or to the taking of such land ; and to send shell writing within Forty Days from the first publication hereof to the above-named Wairoa Highway Board.
