CHUBBIN LAND BILL.
[from mansard.] 'Major ATKINSON, in moving tin? sccoml muling of this Bill, would only trouble the House with very few remarks upon it, us the proambF fully sot forth its object. Mr Ohuhbin had bought two sections of land at Waihi, in the Patea district, ami had paid a small amount on of the purchase money. When wont afterwards to complete tffT purchase he was informed that the Government had stopped in and bought the hind. Mr Worgiin was then purchasing confiscated land from various persons in that district on behalf of the Government. He purchased the land in question from the Natives, and so set aside this man’s claim. The Government having purchased land, they were unable to re-sell it without the authority of an Act of the Assembly. It was considered only fair and reasonable that Mr Chubbin should be allowed to complete his purchase, and this Bill was introduced for that purpose. Mr MURRAY could not support the second reading of the Bill, as he did not see why the Government should give up the land in the manner proposed. He thought they were giving too much consideration to the Province of Taranaki in respect to the obtaining of land. Mr SHEEHAN could not agree with the honorable member who had just sat down, as he thought this was a fair case for the action of the Government. The Government, not being aware that Mr Chubbin had entered into negotiations for the purchase of this land, had subsequently acquired a title to the whole block, and they now wished to put the claimant in the position he was entitled to be placed in. He intended to support the second reading of the Bill. Bill read a second time.
