BOOKMAKING CHARGE
£125 FINE IMPOSED LOCAL CASE HEARD. Joseph Harold David, for whom Mr R. J. Carruthers appeared, pleaded guilty yesterday in the Pahiatua Magistrate’s Court before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., to a charge' of bookmaking. Detective A. B. Meiklejohn, of Palmerston North, prosecuted. A charge of keeping a common gam’nghouse was withdrawn Detective Meiklejohn said' that on August 28th last he searched David’s premises in Main Street. In an office in the rear of the shop, there were two telephones, and seemed to he solely used for betting purposes. On that day there were +wo race meetings, th e Taranaki Hunt and the trots at Christchurch. Tli e betting material seized disclosed that betting to the tune of £331 12s 6d had been conducted and while he was there a surprisingly large number of telephone rings came through. David had been charged on four former occas 011 s. He had been fined £IOO on the last appearance and now appeared to b e in a sound financial position. Mr Gairuthers said that Dav d had volunteered for the Army "early ii\ the war ; he had conducted his business openly and made taxation returns. There had been no concealment. Mr Lawry said that lie must make the fine heavier. David would be fined £125 and costs.
