ANONYMOUS LETTERS

REGARDING PUBLIC FUNCTION PATRIOTIC SOCIETY DISCUSSION At last night’s meeting of the executive of the Patriotic Society, the secretary, Mr J. Hutton, said that ! ho would like to see better attendances of the publi*. at the Society’s annual meetings. Poor interest was shown, by many in the town and in tho country districts. The people concerned in arranging functions for the welfare of the boys were publicspirited persons who were pleased to do these things w ithout thought of reward or kudos. And yet although tlie attendances at meetings were ■ disapixjinting, there were people j who were ready to make petty comj plaints and who levelled destructive criticism in letters to the local J above a “nom-de-plume.” He suggested that a letter he sent to the “Horald” from the Society asking these people to come to the annual meeting next Tuesday and calling their attention to the fact that they can then avail themselves of the pri- | vilege of selecting the committee to J do the jobs of those whom they sc | despicably attacked in anonymous letters to the ‘‘Herald.” Mr J. W. Greaves said that ho ! pould heartily agree with Mr Hutton. ! He had heard criticism from people I who showed no interest at all in tho ! w’ar effort. He thought it would he better if they cam© along t« the | meetings instead of writing letters and hiding behind a “nom-de-pluiuc.'* Mr A. G. Hogg said that it was I impossible to condone the actions * i j those who wrote such critical letters. 'To his mind the petty outbursts | marred the glory of tin wonderful functions the Society had given *j| their best to stage. The patrioic work of this district, he said, centres around the local bodies and there are members of those bodies who do not assist the patriotic efforts and next day on the street criticise those who have d©no the work. Some of them do not attend ordinary meetings, but when there is some prominence to bo gained at the larger functions they are to be found in. the forefront. It was resolved to send a letter to the “Herald’’ inviting the general public and particularly those who have been critical of the Society’j members efforts to be present at the annual meeting on Tuesday next, when, they will be given the opportunity of standing up in public and offering ther critcism.
