ALLIED COLUMN FROM CHAD
ITALIAN ADMISSION. United Piess Assn.— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 4. Rome radio admits that Allied columns in southern Libya have succeeded in infiltrating deep iuto the Italian territory and constitute danger to Axis stropgpoints in the Pezzan area, deep in the desert, about 500 miles south of Tripoli. The forces referred to may be a column reported some time ago to be moving in from Lake Ohad, t'he movements of which have been cloaked in secrecy. Wadi Zamzani, where Rommel appears to be planning to make a stand against the Eighth Army, is a rock-strewn dry watercourse, 195 miles from Tripdlf. The “New York Times ” correspondent in Libya reports that two roughly parallel defensive systems are under construction at Wadi Zamzam, but {the British, with their superior mobility, should be able to crack them, and turn the enemy's flank from the south.
