NEW YEAR’S EVE

CROWD IN LOCAL STREETS New Year’s Eve was celebrated m customary style in Paliiatua and although the crowd in the streets comparatively subdued there was undoubtedly a brightness and lightheartedness that was lacking on the tew preceding occasions. Young folk and old wished the season's greetings and shopping was brisk in some retail establishments. Fireworks were evident on a lesser scale than usual but the young folk* evidently enjoyed themselves nevertheless. Cp to a late hour, a crowd paraded the town which with the relaxing of the lighting restrictions was much better illuminated than for some time past The shortage of petrol was obvious but did not totally prohibit the traditional “first-footing.’’ Splendid support was accorded the New Year Ball and even after many folk had left the streets and shops for the Drill Hall, the town was anything but deserted until a late hour.
