All the planes returned. Huge fires were started, and the Japanese were so surprised that they offered only erratic anti-aircraft fire Admiral Nindtz disclosed that the bombing raid on Wake Island was the largest mass Army Jieavy bomber raid during tbe Pacific war. The attack was made at a low level and the fires were visible from a distance of 75 miles.
