AMERICAN BOMBERS SMASH WAKE ISLAND. United Press Assn.- By Electric. Telegraph—Copyright HONOLULU, Jan. 1. American bombers dropped 40 tons of*bombs on Wake Island on December 24. All the planes returned. Huge fires were started, and the Japanese were so surprised that they offered only erratic anti-aircraft fire Admiral Nindtz disclosed that the bombing raid on Wake Island was the largest mass Army Jieavy bomber raid during tbe Pacific war. The attack was made at a low level and the fires were visible from a distance of 75 miles.
