THE NEW YEAR BALL
OVER 500 ATTEND. After a year or successful functions the Pahiatua Patiiotic Entertainers heralded 1.943 at a New Year Ball in the Drill Hall now safe from army requisition. Servicemen were present in force, including an American sailor, and th© civilian public too, extended all the support for whit h this district is noted. A variety programme of dance novelties and the adoption of paper hats heightened the carnival spirit as the night wore on. Midnight was greeted with high revelry and the traditional singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Mr Russ Merrie was M.C. and had the assistance of Mr H. Gowler. Music was supplied by a team of notable local musicians playing in relays, namely Mrs A. Tait, Messrs Peter Jackson, L. Strange, George Taylor, Ivan Merrie and M. Greaves. The skill of pipes was heard from tnno to time, Mr R. Burns being the player. Over 500 people attended and door takings exceeded 1150.
