AMERICAN BOMBERS OVER EUROPE
SUBMARINE BASE SUFFERS. (British Official Wireless). (Deceived 11.20 a.m.). RUGBY, December 31. Tt is officially announced that heavy bombers of the United States Army Air Force attacked submarine pens at Lorient this afternoon. The weather was good and squadrons of th© R.A.F.. Dominion and Allied fighters made covering and supporting sweeps, but did not encounter any enemy aircraft. A formation of enemy fighters which attempted to intercept the bombers in the target area were fought off, and a number were destroyed but details are not yet available.
Later in the afternoon. American fighters on an offensive patrol over the Boulogne-Abbeville area, attacked a goods train, the last three wagons of which were seen to explode. From the day’s operation, three bombers are missing.
