Reporters referred to the Java Sea battle and Vice-Admiral Helfrich replied that President Roosevelt brought up nothing that was past, and when asked how soon Java might bo retaken, replied: “1 would like to be optimistic. but cannot. It will be a long and bitter struggle and the Japs will fight to the end.” ViceAdmiral Helfrich was reminded that units of the Dutch Navy and Air Force were now operating under General MacArthur. Vice-Admiral Helfrich is shortly going to Australia.
