ADMIRAL DARLAN'S DEATH
COMPLICATES ISSUE United Press Assn.—Bv Electric Tel eg r a ph —Copy r i gh t. LONDON, Dec. 25. “Admiral Darlan’s death settles for al! practical purposes the most acute political end diplomatic controversy of the war,” says the diplomatic correspondent of the Press Association. “His death will certainly create a happier frame of mind among many people, including some ecclesiastics. who regarded him as a, traitor and felt that ethical objections should outweigh utilitarian advantages. Both the House of Commons and the country were split over the issue of Darlan’s influence.” “The assassination of Dari an vastly complicates the American political arrangements in North Africa,” says the Washington correspondent of the New York Times. ‘ The future course of American conduct at present is in doubt but a strong feeling prevails that General Giraud will be chosen to succeed Admiral Darlan. However, it is emphasised that General Eisenhower is empowered to make all political arrangements in North Africa, and presumably the choice will be left in his hands.”
