WAKEMAN STREET. (From the “Pahiatua Star” of March 26th, 1889). At the meeting of the Town Board, held last evening, Mr Crewe wished to know why the engineer had not carried out his instructions regarding the metalling of Wakeman Street. The engineer: I was ordered not to proceed with the work until funds are available. Mr Crewe thought the metalling should be gone on with, as if left it would cost more to do. Another thing, a good deal of money had been iiromised towards the formation and metalling of this street, so that it would cost the Board very little. Mr Reese: Will those who have promised money along Wakeman Street pay unless it is metalled ? Mr Crewe: I am sure they won’t. Chairman: In future all money should be collected before tenders are accepted. Mr Crewe: I will move that tenders be called for metalling, to be in by next meeting. If the property owners do not pay their share by that time the tenders need not be opened. Seconded by Mr Sedcole and carried, Mr Stewart, however, remarking that it was unfair to call for tenders and not accept any.
