THE BURLING SHIELD

PONGAROA DEFEATED IN FINAL GAME. The last round of the Puketoi cricket championship concluded last Saturday with the game between Pongaroa and Makuri, at Pongaroa. The result had no bearing on the championship as Makuri had too big a lead and therefore won the Burling Shield for 1938-39. Pongaroa batted first and compiled 163. Makuri compiled 226, thus winning by 63 runs on the first innings after a very good game. Makuri ar ± to be congratulated on their fine performance this season as they are the youngest team in the competition. Detailed scoring: PONGAROA.—First Innings. S. Raleigh, played on, b C.
