THE EGG MARKET
NOW 6d A DOZEN ABOVE LAST YEARS RATES. An increase of twopence a dozen on the wholesale price of eggs in the Wellington market was announced on Monday. The ruling rates are about 6d a dozen above those for the same period last year, and from 2d to 4d higher than those in February, 1937. Monday’s prices as quoted by the Internal Marketing Department, together with the mid-February prices in 1938 and 1937, are as follows: Supers, 1939 2s 4d a dozen, 1938 Is 10d, 1937 2s ; A grade, 1939 2s 2d a dozen. 1938 Is Bd, 1937 Is lid: B grade, 1939 2s a dozen, 1938 Is 6d, 1937 Is lOd. The department expects the market to remain steady at the new rates, though prices will depend oa the demand, which has been abnormal because of the lateness of the flush of the tomato season. The high prices for poultry at Christmas is also considered to be n contributing factor to the present state of the ' egg market on which an exceptionallv strong demand has been combined 'with a reduced supply-
