A GARDEN MEETING
WAKURI WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. A MEMBER FAREWELLED. The Makuri Women’s Institute held their February meeting in the beautiful garden of Mrs F. Gregorie, Gorge End. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Waring, Jury and Mocre. A clock croquet competition was won by Miss J. Jennings. The points prize prize, best bloom, judged by Mrs H. Paterson and Mrs Wilson, resulted as follows : Mrs Gregorie (a wonderful gladioli bloom) 1, Mrs Rutherford (a dahlia) 2, Mrs Eglinton 3. A charming talk on gardens and flowers was given by Mrs Paterson, who was presented with a posy of carnations by little David Tylee. A posy of roses was presented to Mrs Trvine Paterson. Mrs H. Morison proposed a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Paterson for her enjoyable talk and this wa? carried by acclamation.
Nominations for committee for next year were taken.
Another competition, an original verse about an Institute member, brought quite a number of clever and humorous entries. These will be judged by Mrs H. Paterson, Mrs I. Paterson and Miss M. Paterson and the winner announced at the next meeting.
Mrs Jennings, referring to Mrs Gregorie’s impending departure to Palmerston North to live, expressed ihe regret all felt at losing her as a member of the Makuri Institute. As a past vice-president and a cbmmittee member of some years’ standing, she would be much missed. Many happy meetings had been held in her garden. She asked Mrs Gregorie to accept a small memento from her fellow-members. A posy (made by Mrs R. A. "Wilson) was presented to Mrs Gregorie, who suitably replied. Musical honours were accorded her.
The singing of “"Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem concluded the meeting.
